VBBP participating banks* include large and small national and state-chartered banks, all of which can accept Veterans as customers regardless of where they live. Most VBBP banks operate on military installations and all are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

VBBP participating credit unions* include large and small national or state-chartered credit unions. Please note: credit unions have “field of membership” criteria Veterans must meet before becoming members. Credit unions are member-owned and require share accounts by members. Most share accounts require a $5 to $25 deposit, which is generally the cost of purchasing one par value share at a credit union in order to establish a membership account. Some credit unions may also charge a nominal membership fee ($1 to $5) to join as well. All participating credit unions are insured by the National Credit Union Administration.

When choosing a bank or credit union, you should ask yourself and the financial institution the following questions:

  1. Are physical branches important to you? If so, does the bank or credit union have physical branches in the places you need them? Most banks and credit unions maintain a digital presence on the internet and their products and services are generally accessible to any current customer with internet access. However, sometimes – especially when you need to resolve a problem with your account or when a caretaker or family member also has access to your account – being able to talk face-to-face to a person makes a difference.
  2. Do you qualify to become a customer of your desired bank or credit union? All of the banks and credit unions participating in VBBP and listed below are committed to providing accounts to all qualified veterans. If a veteran is not qualified, they have also agreed to help the veteran become qualified. All banks may accept all veterans, but some credit unions with limited “fields of membership” may not be able to accept veterans who do not fall within those fields.
  3. Will the bank or credit union provide free checking accounts to veterans who direct deposit their VA benefits into those accounts? Again, VBBP participant banks and credit unions will provide free checking to direct deposit customers.

What additional financial products to you need or want? A relationship with a bank or credit union can be limited or extensive, depending on your needs and whether you qualify for certain products. Before choosing a financial institution, make sure it has the products and services you need or want. For example, most banks and credit unions offer customers access to financial products such as debit cards when they open checking accounts. Debit cards provide at least as much flexibility as Direct Express prepaid cards and are attached to checking accounts that allow customers to more easily manage and save money. Check out the Direct Deposit, Direct Express, and Paper Check comparison chart for more information.

Fitzsimons Army Hospital (FAH) Federal Credit Union opened in 1955 with only 15 members and $360 in assets. Our mission, even with limited resources, was to provide trusted, local financial services to our community. Serving those who serve is part of our legacy. In 1995, the U.S. Army announced that they would be closing the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. In order to continue providing financial services to our membership, we applied to the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) to become a community charter for Aurora. The History of Ko’olau Federal Credit Union

Founded in 1953, the credit union opened under the name of Marine Corps Air Station Federal Credit Union to serve all personnel on the base formerly known as Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) and is now known as Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH). Over the last 69 years there have been a few name changes and the membership of Ko’olau FCU has expanded, but we never stopped our focus on the financial needs of the MCBH community.  In support of that commitment KFCU still maintains its headquarters and most of its staff on Mokapu Road. In addition, many of its Board of Directors and other volunteers were civilian executives on MCBH. Finally, in 2019 we rebranded WCFCU to Ko’olau Federal Credit Union and expanded our charter to include all people who live, work, worship or attend school in Honolulu County (the island of O’ahu). New members are required to make an initial $5.00 deposit. This deposit is required to purchase one share in KFCU which earns you the value and benefits of membership for a lifetime.

VyStar Credit Union’s roots trace back to Naval Air Station Jacksonville (NAS Jax), where we were chartered as Jax Navy Federal Credit Union in 1952. Our original objective was to provide a safe place for civil service and military employees to save and borrow money during a time when obtaining those services was a challenge for many. Fifty years later, our credit union began to extend its field of membership and today includes anyone living or working in a majority of counties in Florida and several in southeast Georgia. However, the earnestness we feel for our troops remains just as strong. From our very beginning, we have been committed to providing safe, reliable and competitive ways for our veterans and military personnel to manage their finances. We are grateful for the selfless sacrifices they make to protect our country and ensure our freedom. VyStar is honored to serve past and present military members and their families, and we look forward to continuing to graciously support them in any way we can.
